Impact of an Incinerator on Our Community: What Can We Expect?

🌍 Faced with the incineration project imposed by Gestió Agroramadera de Ponent (GAP) and Griñó Ecològic in Juneda, just 5 kilometers from Torregrossa, we want to share with you some of the everyday effects we could experience, both physical and mental, to help raise awareness about what it could mean to live so close to this facility.

🔍 Effects on Our Daily Lives:

Air Quality: Increase in contaminants affecting our health. Our weather, with many days of high pressure, lack of wind, and winter fog, causes pollutants to accumulate more easily in the atmosphere, increasing the risk to our health. The dioxins and furans emitted by the incinerator are extremely dangerous, as they can cause cancer, affect the immune, reproductive, endocrine, and nervous systems. In addition to respiratory problems, these toxic compounds can cause serious long-term chronic diseases.
Truck Traffic: Increased truck traffic transporting waste to the plant will increase noise on roads near Torregrossa, air pollution, and deterioration of local road infrastructure, affecting rest and tranquility, as well as increasing the risk of traffic accidents.
Odor: Emission of unpleasant odors that reduce our comfort. The lack of wind can cause these odors to linger in the air longer, affecting daily life quality and making it difficult to enjoy outdoor activities.
Water: Risk of contamination of our aquifers and the Urgell Canal, which could affect agricultural and livestock use. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and other European public health agencies, very low concentrations of dioxins in water can be enough to cause adverse health effects. These substances can contaminate large volumes of water and bioaccumulate in the food chain, severely affecting the health of the population and animals, as well as damaging crops, which are the economic base of our community.
Quality of Sweet Fruit, Oil, Eggs, and Meat: Dioxins and furans can affect the quality of produced food, forcing its withdrawal from the food market.

💭 Mental and Emotional Effects:

Stress and Anxiety: Constant concern for personal and family health. Knowing we are exposed to toxic substances can generate high levels of stress and anxiety, affecting mental health and overall well-being.
Risk Perception: Feelings of insecurity and danger. The presence of an incinerator can create a constant perception of risk, affecting the tranquility and quality of life of residents.
Property Values: Devaluation of properties and economic difficulties. Proximity to an incinerator can reduce property values, making it difficult to sell or rent homes and generating economic concerns for homeowners.
Area Reputation: Negative image affecting tourism, local businesses, and especially agriculture and livestock, which are the foundation of our economy. The presence of an incinerator can deter visitors and investors, negatively impacting local economic development.

L'associació Fem Llavor de Torregrossa neix de la profunda preocupació d'un grup de ciutadans pel nostre entorn natural i el seu benestar. Vivim en una època crítica en què l'emergència climàtica és una realitat innegable a escala mundial. La finalitat de l'associació és promoure i impulsar accions concretes per preservar i millorar la salut del nostre entorn natural, així com promoure la sostenibilitat i la consciència ecològica en la comunitat de Torregrossa. Volem ser un agent de canvi actiu que fomenti la protecció dels recursos naturals, la conservació de la biodiversitat i l'adopció de pràctiques més respectuoses amb el medi ambient. Mitjançant la sensibilització, l'educació i la participació activa de tots els membres de la comunitat, volem generar un impacte positiu en la preservació del nostre entorn i en la lluita contra el canvi climàtic. Treballarem per crear sinergies amb altres actors locals, com institucions, empreses i altres organitzacions, perquè junts puguem desenvolupar projectes i iniciatives sostenibles que beneficiïn el nostre municipi i les generacions futures. En resum, l'associació Fem Llavor té com a finalitat ser un motor de canvi que promogui la protecció de l'entorn natural de Torregrossa, fomenti la sostenibilitat i la consciència ecològica, i col·labori amb altres actors per aconseguir un futur més saludable i sostenible per a tothom.
